Here is more information I have gathered on providers:

Flexiscale (http://www.flexiscale.com/)

Amazon S3/EC2 (http://www.amazon.com/gp/browse.html?node=201590011)

Mosso by RackSpace (http://www.mosso.com/rackspace.jsp)

Those providers above own the hardware/software infrastructure of the cloud.

The following are more the "service offering" providers:

3Tera (http://www.3tera.com/)

RightScale (http://www.rightscale.com/m/)

Layered Technologies (http://www.layeredtech.com/hosting-solutions/virtual-grid-utility-computing.php)
powered by 3Tera

Elastra (http://www.elastra.com/)

MySQL Cloud by Sun (http://blogs.sun.com/jonathan/entry/opensolaris_amazon_mysql_and_glassfish)
in Amazon S3

morph eXchange (http://www.morphexchange.com/)
in Amazon S3

EnterpriseDB (http://www.enterprisedb.com/)
postgreSQL

I will make another post with some other cloud offering providers to a different degree.

Please provide any input you may have. I also came across a blog (http://www.johnmwillis.com/) that is serving as a great resource tool and for "checks and balances" of my research.

AWS is def the leader in my opinion. It's a perfect environment for startups.

Welcome to TheCloudTalk once we have a provider directory we will be sure to add hosting365.com (http://www.hosting365.com/hosting_solutions/servers) on there.

This is what alot of people are using nowadays given that recent outage (http://www.thecloudtalk.com/showthread.php?t=101&highlight=amazon+outage)
though I am sure that it will not stop people from adapting the cloud technology.

AWS makes a lot of noise, and is doing a fantastic job of educating the market about cloud possibilities, creating opportunities for more enterprise and niche providers to make headway :)

I have a few others. you can also see a link on our site to the forrester report on the top 11 cloud providers (4 of which are running AppLogic from 3tera) (http://www.3tera.com).

here are some of the guys that are using the AppLogic platform to provide their cloud services. most offer virtual servers, virtual racks or clusters, and full private clouds.

I'm curious to know what people think the "perfect environment" for startups is in the cloud, and why. Some factors you might want to consider are:
- Cost of resources
- Ease of deployment
- Support
- Uptime
- High availability
- Security
- Availability of operations services, including the ability to throw code "over the wall" to your provider and have them fully manage your site, that allow you to avoid hiring IT staff
- SLA (service level agreements)
- Vendor lock-in issues
- Flexibility/transparency (can you trust them to be your partner)
- Domain knowledge (can they help you get the most of their service by advising you on your implementation and deployment.)
